Our resin is entirely wild-harvested where the trees naturally yield their resin.
The harvest of gums and resins takes place during the dry season, as they are easily damaged by rain.
A number of incisions are made into the bark, and the gum resins are allowed to ooze out and solidify for a few weeks. The harvesters then return to each tree to collect the resin. The resins are then transported to local villages where they are further dried in the shade.
Locally called Maydi, Boswellia Frereana is the pride of Somali culture. It has a very different chemical composition from the other types of Frankincense, contains no Boswellic acids, but is just as powerful a healing and anti-inflammatory resin as the others. It is the preferred Frankincense type of the Coptic church and is used extensively in Arabia as a high-end natural chewing gum, incense, and cosmetics base. Sometimes referred to as the king of Frankincense and Yemenite chewing gum.

Frankincense Frereana-Maydi

The King of Frankincense
Wild-Harvested Boswellia frereana Resin Tears – Somaliland

Often called the “King of Frankincense,” Boswellia frereana is a prized and rare resin native to the rugged highlands of Somaliland. Distinguished by its soft, chewy texture and warm, spicy balsamic aroma with subtle hints of honey and citrus, Frereana stands apart from other frankincense species.

Highly esteemed throughout the Middle East and North Africa, this resin is traditionally chewed like gum, burned as incense, and used in natural wellness and spiritual rituals.

🌿 Did You Know?

Although it contains no boswellic acids, Boswellia frereana is celebrated for its healing and anti-inflammatory properties. It is the preferred frankincense of the Coptic Church and revered across Arabia for its luxurious applications—from natural chewing gum to a refined base for perfumes and cosmetics.

🔥 Suggested Uses

  • Aromatic Burning: Burn on charcoal for a calming, spiritually grounding fragrance.

  • Macerations & Tinctures: Infuse in oils or alcohol for skin and wellness preparations.

  • DIY Skincare: Powder and add to balms or facial cleansers for its reputed skin-soothing benefits.

🌍 Ethical & Traditional Sourcing

Our Frereana resin is wild-harvested using traditional methods, supporting sustainable practices and fair compensation for local Somali harvesters.

Compared to the classic Boswellia carterii, Frereana offers a softer, warmer aroma—ideal for those seeking a less citrus-forward experience.

📦 Packaging Details
